 Random Acts of Kindness

A Captured by Aliens story

By Thelma Mary Caroline

It seemed like the whole of us was at the store Saturday evening when the counter lady returned from Earth.

We clammored over the counter, each awaiting our packages.  Packets of beef jerky, cavier, expensive wine were passed around.

I wonder what the cashiers must think when she buys it all.  Hopefully she doesn't go to the same store every time.

But me?  I hang back.  No hurry to get my stamps and envelopes.  No need to even look at the newspaper.  It's old news.  And really, who cares?  Nothing it says could ever possibly affect me in any way.

Finally the crowd thins.  Many of us retreat to the recrecation rooms, but more just hang out in the hallways.

After a long time, the counter lady hands me a small box of envelopes and a book of stamps.

"I got you the New York Times.  I hope that's okay."

I glare at her, and walk back to my room.  Our room.  Six hundred of us share it.

Before long, the paper is in shreds, wrapped carefully around the crisp hundred dollar bills I had once hid behind a brick.  I placed\ each shred into an envelope.

I don't need the money.  I probably never will.  And if I do, it doesn't matter.  I can take care of myself.

In the middle of the night, I go into the recreation room.  Some of us are still here.  Some of us are awake.  But it's not as crowded as during the day.

At the computer, I type in addresses, and print them on the envelopes.  I have to, so no one recognizes the writing.

People that I liked.  People that I knew.  People that needed the money more than me.  It was the right thing to do.
