 Another "Captured by Aliens" story

Everyone Wants to be an Alien

By Thelma Mary Caroline

It was hard, watching the two girls together.  There was something awkward, something forced between them.  I doubted that Haichelle even liked Blaise.  And Blaise didn't particularly seem to care for Hai.

But they were never apart.  Haichelle was never out of Blaise's view.

And I just couldn't understand it.  I didn't understand why they behaved as they did, and why Blaise always lied about it.

I wanted to talk to Hai.  Really talk to her, not just small talk.  But I knew it would be better to do it around Blaise.

But the perfect plan came to me.  All I had to do was act nonchalant and innocent.

I looked up at Blaise, who was sitting on the couch with Haichelle, watching the big football game.  "Can you do me a favor?"

"Yeah, sure."

I picked up an envelope, my mail in ballot for the upcoming election.  "Can you run this down to the post office?  It needs to be postmarked today."  I hoped she didn't know that was lie.  "I could do it, but I'm running behind getting dinner ready.  Haichelle, you don't mind helping me, do you?"

"Of course not," the younger woman said.

I noted the sideways glance that Blaise threw at Hai.

But Blaise still agreed readily.  "I'll be back in a few minutes."

She would walk to the post office of course.  It seemed like she'd always been consious of the enviroment.

I filled a pot with water, and handed an onion to Hai.  She dillegently began slicing it.

"Remind me how you met Blaise again?"

She was silent for a moment.  "Fishing.  In Canada."

"You don't really seem like the type for that."

"I get that a lot."

"How did you guys really meet?"

She looked up at me uncertainly.  "I'm not really supposed to tell you that."

So it is a lie.  "I suppose Blaise would get mad."

"Yes."

"What if I promised not to tell Blaise?"

"But I can't tell you!  The others would know."

"The ... others?"

"Blaise's friends."

"Blaise has friends."  That was news to me.  I always thought of her as the kind of girl who wandered around town all day.

"They're my friends, too, I guess.  Except that I don't like them."

"Yeah, you don't even seem to like Blaise very much.  I've noticed that she treats you like [an oyster's lost cigerette].  You shouldn't stay with someone like that."

Hai looked up, startled.  "I can't leave her.  That's against the rules."

The rules?  "Whose rules?  Blaise's rules?"

Suddenly it dawned on me that this was some kind of sick game.  What did I really know about Blaise anyway?  Maybe she really was a control freak, wanting to take advantage of someone.

"I really can't talk to you about this.  Ask Blaise.  She'll tell you everything.  Just ask."

The door swung open, and Blaise wiped her feet on the mat.  "It's pretty windy out there."

She came into the kitchen, and picked up a chunk of onion.   Then she takes a step back, obviously studying our faces.  "Did I miss something?"

I saw Haichelle shake her head out of the corner of my eye.  Putting the noodles into the water, I tried to maintane a look of indifference.

"Okay, just checking.  I got your envelope mailed, Sheila."

"Thanks, Blaise.  I really appreciate you taking that down there for me."
